When your five-year-old comes home and says
Mommy, I know the "F" word
and then proceeds to tell you
it's "fart,"
you realize that life could be a lot worse!

Major milestone: Maya did not use her strap-on flotation device at all during this week's swimming lesson. She swam lap after lap after lap, all on her own!

Kathy, who used to swim competitively, is amazed by how quickly the kids are progressing. Kathy took lessons for years before she was able to swim even one lap; Maya and Bryn have only been taking lessons for 13 months!

For a while now we've been asking the kids naturally-occurring math questions (e.g., if all four family members have three pieces of pizza, we'll ask what 4 x 3 is). This practice, however, has left the kids literally begging for more math, and we've had to start inventing our own problems. Here's the latest one we posed to Bryn:
92 - 14
After thinking for a minute, Bryn informed us that the answer was 78. Go Bryn!

From despair to elation in, literally, two seconds:
Maya: Oh no, my flower puppet lost one of her eyes!

Maya: I know, she's winking!
Has there ever been a speedier problem-solver?

Sudden mastery of a skill is one of the coolest things about watching kids learn. They're trying something haltingly for a while ... gradually working on it ... and then ... Boom! All of a sudden they get it, and it's like they've been doing it all their lives.

For example, a few weekends ago Maya suddenly "got" swimming on her back -- happily zooming up and down the pool using the arm motions of the elementary backstroke along with a gorgeously relaxed flutter kick. This weekend Bryn made the same seemingly-effortless breakthrough, and we asked her how she did it. As it turns out, the secret of her success can be summarized in three words:
chicken, airplane, soldier
What? You don't understand why this three-word tip from her swimming instructor did the trick? Hint: it describes a series of arm positions. Try it!

Kathy saying goodbye to Bryn the other night:
Kathy: "When I get back, I'll tiptoe into your room, kiss you goodnight, and whisper 'I love you' in your ear."

Bryn: "Will you tell that to Maya too?"
Kathy waking up Maya the next morning:
Kathy: "Last night I kissed you while you were sleeping and whispered 'I love you' in your ear."

Maya: "Did you tell that to Bryn too?"
Symmetrically considerate sisters!
