Today's math moment:
[Setting: Early morning, Kathy lying in bed. Enter Bryn.]

Bryn: What's 6 + 6?
Kathy: 12.
Bryn: How do you make 10 but not 5 + 5?
Kathy: 6 + 4
Bryn: Oh, 6 + 5 = 11
What a way to start the day!

In the past few months, we've been thrilled to watch Maya start reading. In addition to correcting Kathy when she misreads one of their books, Maya has been reading road signs. Even more exciting for us as parents, however, is watching her make educated guesses upon encountering decontextualized words. Recently, for example, we were in an Italian restaurant that listed Italian cities in a word puzzle, and upon seeing "Florence" on the list, Maya said "Florida." Way to go, kiddo!

Speaking of people we haven't seen in a while...

Beth Finke, whom we knew a decade ago when Paul worked with her husband Mike, is now an occasional NPR commentator whose memoir Long Time, No See was published last year. Yay Beth!

At dinner last night, the kids insisted on having a choice in drink selection. Usually this is no problem; they can choose milk, water or (occasionally) juice. However, we just learned that the local water supply is unfluoridated, which means for one meal a day we need to avoid milk so the supplements will get absorbed properly.

Not only was milk off the list of choices but--since we haven't been to the store in a while--so too was juice. Still wanting to give the kids a choice, Paul broke out the poker face:
Daddy: You can have water or wah-TURR.
Kids: What's that?
Daddy: The stuff you drink or the stuff you swim in.
Kids: No daddy. What's wah-TURR?
Daddy: You start with a glass of regular water, then turn it three times like this. Voila!
Kids: [giggles] Let me try!
From desperation to inspiration...

Ever noticed that being tired makes you hungry? According to a study at the U of C released yesterday, that's no accident. Less sleep means less of the hormone leptin (helps you feel full) and more of the hormone ghrelin (makes you feel hungry).

Indeed, from what we remember of the U of C, it's no accident that the faculty there is studying what happens to massively sleep-deprived young people. We're just pleased to see them do so professionally. ;-)
