Asked to choose which of four kinds of cereal she wanted to eat, Maya demurred. Asked again, she said "all of them". Asked why, she insisted:
"I want a cereal collage."
Much hilarity ensued.

As we've mentioned before, one of the greatest joys of parenting Bryn and Maya is seeing how they interact with each other.  Often, for example, they'll praise each other's art work, typically exclaiming "That is so beautiful!"  They also recently had the following conversation:

Bryn:  You're my sister, and you're very special.

Maya:  I love you, Bryn.

Bryn:  I love you, Maya.

They also reveal their bond by taking pride in each other's accomplishments.  This past weekend, Maya was thrilled by Bryn's latest feat; for the first time, Bryn unfastened both buckles on her carseat.  Maya, waiting on the sidewalk for her sister to climb out of the car, exclaimed "Bryn, you did it!  Come give me a hug!"

Maya's latest ultra-exuberant tag phrase is:
"Mag-nificent! Do it again!"

Last week, the kids had their annual checkup, and the pediatrician did the obligatory height and weight checks:
  • Maya: 41 1/2 in, 39 lb
  • Bryn: 40 1/2 in, 42 lb
Other than the three shots each, this visit was pretty uneventful -- especially when compared to their last visit.

Evidently people just can't resist the "twin effect" and will make all sorts of complimentary and/or curious comments, given the slightest opportunity to do so. (You wouldn't believe how slight. It's like these are the first and last twins they'll ever see, and they can't let the opportunity pass unremarked.) All the twin parenting books warn you about this, and very early on we learned all the camouflaging tricks you need if you want to get in and out of public places quickly.

This "untwin camo" has long since become second nature, but yesterday we wound up at the grocery store in coordinating Fourth of July outfits. Sure enough, on the way out, a kindly gentleman couldn't resist describing the kids as "criminally cute".

In another dozen years, this could get scary. ;-)

PS: Of course, there can be a plus side to the twin effect. When the kids were young and we needed a parental pick-me-up, we'd take them out in the double stroller and wait for strangers to approach us. You could tell how bad off we were if we went so far as to deliberately dress them in coordinated (or even matching) outfits. The kids have always been well-behaved in public, so we could just sit back and bask in the compliments. It literally never failed.

Wow. The images coming back from Cassini the past few weeks are just breathtaking:

Is it too late to sign up for astronaut training? How fast can I get there? Will we get sick of hearing Sinatra singing "Fly Me to the Moon" on the way?

Wow.
