Okay, so it's an inviolable classroom tradition to bring in cupcakes on your birthday and inflict a sugar high on your teachers and all your friends' parents. So what's a kid to do when their evil parents try to subvert this tradition by baking apple oat bran muffins?
Be sure to get up early, put on your aprons, and help out:
Nothing that frosting and sprinkles can't fix!

In the past year or so, the kids have become curious about where they came from. When Kathy told them that half of them came from Mommy and half came from Daddy, Bryn asked:Which part came from Daddy? My legs? An explanation of DNA failed to clarify the matter.

Before we had kids, we liked to go see movies. Often. In fact, you could probably have called us film buffs. This habit started in college, where several competing film societies each had new stuff playing every night. Even when we left the big city, we still managed to see our share of great movies in suburban multiplexes, art houses, etc.
Becoming parents for the first time changed that, though. Big time. To get a sense of just how drastic a change this was, consider the latest edition of the New York Times' The 1,000 Best Movies Ever Made (2nd ed., 2004). Of those 1005 movies, Paul has seen 327, or just under a third:- 0 of 2 from 1927-1929 (0%),
- 29 of 86 from the 1930s (34%),
- 36 of 124 from the 1940s (29%),
- 53 of 148 from the 1950s (36%),
- 41 of 148 from the 1960s (28%),
- 43 of 155 from the 1970s (28%),
- 85 of 185 from the 1980s (46%), and
- 39 of 121 from the 1990s (32%), but only
- 1 of 36 from 2000-2002 (3%).
A huge difference, no?
Considering that we only saw one movie annually during the first two years of the kids' lives, that last percentage is actually far more impressive. Since then, we've been taking advantage of a series of semi-regular sitters to start getting out more. Indeed, the one movie in that set that we managed to see was made in 2002. Yet it still just isn't the same.
Not that we'd trade being parents for the ability to see one third of the best movies made this decade. No way! :-)

When Kathy's dad comes to visit, he likes to get together with our neighbor Curtis. Maya was curious about their friendship, and the following conversation ensued:Maya: Mommy, why Grandad and Curtis like to spend time together?
Kathy: When you're friends with someone, you want to spend time with them.
Maya: I'm friends with you. I want to spend time with you. Kathy's heart melted!

This morning, Paul woke up to a series of increasingly silly serenades, including:- "Happy fah-vers day to you",
- "Happy birthday to you", and
- "Wacky fah-vers day to you".
Given that the singers were dancing in an occupied bed at the time, it made for quite the floor show.
The snuggles were awesome, too. ;-)

For quite a while now, we've been amused by an interesting role reversal phenomenon going on with Bryn. When she was about 21 months, for instance, she looked at the toilet and said to Kathy, "Dat dirty. You kean it." She then immediately pointed to the shower and said, "Dat dirty too. You kean it."
More recently, she caught Kathy licking jelly off a table knife and said "Mommy, we don't put knives in our mouth. It will cut you." Last night, she caught Paul tipping his chair and, predictably, told him not do that. She then continued the lecture, telling him that "even if you are by yourself, you don't ever do that." It's a lucky thing we've got her around to keep us in line!

Recently Maya was looking at some old pictures of us, and she asked if she and Bryn were in Kathy's belly when the pictures were taken. When Kathy told her no, Maya asked when they were in her belly. Kathy replied that they started living in her belly in October 1999, and Maya then responded:"And we came out on our birthday, June 28. Did you eat all our cake?" Cake was just about the last thing on our minds, kiddo!
