Tonight at bedtime, Kathy said to the kids, "I have something to tell you. I'm very proud to be your mommy." Maya promptly replied:

"Mommy, I have something to tell you. I'm very proud to be your kid."

Last month, Kathy was slicing cheese for the kids and asked each child how many pieces she wanted. Maya said she wanted five pieces and, when Bryn said she also wanted five pieces, Maya immediately commanded "Mommy, cut ten pieces."

A few days later, Kathy put four pieces of bread in the toaster. Bryn, knowing that she and her sister each only wanted one piece, asked "Why is there four? 'Cause Mommy wants two?"

We've also been asking the kids math questions since they enjoy working with numbers so much. The other night, when we only had time for ten spoonsful of yogurt before bedtime, we had the following conversation:
Kathy: Okay, we can have ten bites. We've already had six. How many more bites can we have?

Maya: Four.

Kathy [two bites later]: Okay, we've had eight bites. How many more can we have?

Bryn: Two.
Who would have thought they'd be doing applied math at three and a half? Go figure.

Today as we were driving past a field of waddling geese, Bryn said to Kathy, "I love geese." She then made the following obervation:

"One goose is a goose. Geese are gooses."

Today Kathy and the kids were in a toy store, about to buy a children's toy, when Bryn said that she'd like to buy a card for Daddy. The store did have cards, but the choice was limited. After Kathy talked the kids out of getting Paul a card that said "To a special girl," Maya selected one that said "On your 11th birthday." The following conversation ensued:

Kathy: Honey, Daddy isn't 11.
Maya: Okay, but let's get it for him now and give it to him when he is 11.

In the past few months, the kids started getting into math.

In addition to lining up numbers on the fridge, they now can:
  • count forwards from one to "twentyteen,"
  • count backwards from ten to zero,
  • add various small numbers (from 0 through about 5), and
  • subtract 0, 1, or 2 from numbers less than 6.
It adds some nice variety to time that might otherwise be filled with incessant spelling!

This week, the kids have been writing books. One of their new teachers, Tara, transcribes their stories, and they draw the illustrations. Here is Bryn's first story:
Once upon when the dragon jumped into a pond when the dragon came and hit the princess. And the king hitted the castle down. And the carpet went falling down. When the carpet and the carpet came tumbling down.
This is Maya's first story:
The kingdom of Noa and then the once upon a time there was a friendly girl whose name was princess. And then a penguin came and the penguin and the princess played together in their garden. They found their garden again. And then they went inside their house, and they played inside their house with their toys. And then their Mom finally found their garden and their dad. They went inside the house and they saw the penguin and the princess.
Maya's second book is even more elaborate, with a cover that notes the title, Maya the Princess. The pages inside read:
Maya the princess and then a king came. And after the king came, then they named the king Bryn. And then Bryn and Maya, the king and the queen and the princess. They went in the castle. They found their castle and their baby. They buyed a stroller at the store. And then they went back home to their castle. Into their castle.
Both kids take great pride in their books and often ask us to read them aloud.

When we moved to California, the family had a single car, so the license plates were, of course:

Thus, when we applied for plates for our second car, we just had to try for the obvious:

The amazing thing was that, in a state full of Internet geeks, these "dot org" plates were still available.

Not any more! :-)
