Maya loves initiating conversations with strangers. Here’s a typical exchange with a middle-aged man she saw standing alone across the street:
Maya: “Hi!”
Man: “Hi!”
Maya: “Where’s your mommy?”

We’re often amused to hear how the kids pick up our vocabulary, intonations, and ways of interacting:
Bryn, gently touching her sister on the shoulder in a typical interaction just before dinner: “Maya hon, you wanna a big fork or a small fork?”
And in a somewhat different vein:
Maya, upon being asked by her mommy if she wanted any V-8 to drink: “absolutely not!”

Today the kids had their annual visit to the doctor's, where we did the usual height and weight checks:- Maya: 39 1/2 in, 35 1/4 lb
- Bryn: 38 1/4 in, 37 1/2 lb
Not surprisingly, the growth charts continue to agree that they're tall (95th and 80th percentiles respectively) and big (90th percentile).
However, we learned the the hard way that the three-year old check-up differs substantially from previous incarnations of this experience. Previously, the pediatrician had asked us, the parents, questions such as "What temperature do you have your hot water heater set to?", and rather than replying "Uh, we have no idea," we could say, looking earnestly parental, "We'll look into that as soon as we get home."
Today, however, she asked questions of the kids themselves:
Doctor: “Kids, what fruits do you eat?”
Maya: “Strawberries.” [So far, so good!]
Doctor: “Oh! What else?”
Maya: “Bueberries. Bananas.” [Go, Maya!]
Doctor: “Oh, good. Bryn, what about you?”
Bryn: “Way.” [We're puzzled but know that Bryn likes to joke with word play]
Doctor: “Way?”
Bryn: “Way.”
Doctor: “Oh. What else?”
Bryn: “Soup.” Luckily, the pediatrician went with the flow, even before Kathy assured her that Bryn was joking. The conversation continued:
Doctor: “Kids, do you brush your teeth every night before you go to bed?”
Maya: “No.” Before we could interject with an earnestly parental comment, there was one last exchange:
Doctor: “Why not?”
Maya: “Because my mommy doesn’t ask me to.” Busted--by a three-year-old.

Exactly two years ago today, you could find us quoting the word of the day. One year ago, it was the phrase of the day. Here's what the kids have been saying more recently:
- "I ate all of my bean greens!"
- --Maya, jokingly referring to the green beans on a potholder hanging by our stove
- "Just let me play for a couple while"
- --Bryn, refining the previously-common utterance "a couple whiles"
- "I wanna go on the American go-round!"
- --Bryn and Maya, repeatedly during several visits to the zoo
- "Uh-oh, I'm not two anymore. I'm three. It's a party day. Whee!"
- --Maya, on her much-anticipated birthday earlier this summer
- "Apples make into apple juice. Oranges make into orange juice. Bagels make into bagel juice."
- --Bryn, apparently deliberating what to drink with dinner
Any guesses about what we'll be quoting this time next year?

Also spotted this week was Maya, reveling in her latest fashion statement, the "bikini":

Usually the kids are quite eager to come in from the car. Yet today when we asked Bryn to come eat dinner, she calmly replied:
"I'm reading. Just two more pages."
Kathy's relatives are all now chortling, because this notorious phrase often crossed her lips from the age of nine on.
PS: Bryn just turned three.
