About a month ago, we decided to revive an old standby -- driving until the kids fell asleep -- due to some recent difficulties at nap time.
On the plus side, this strategy is working very, very well. So much so, in fact, that Saturday's hour-plus nap took place on the shoulder of a five-lane highway, in a car with three good tires out of five. Spare the air, indeed!
On the minus side, naptime on Sunday was simply a good-old-fashioned train wreck. The driver in question spent a few peaceful hours at the tire shop waiting in line amidst hordes of ultra-prepared travellers doing pre-holiday preventive maintenance. Meanwhile, back at home the kids engaged in a little preventive maintenance of their own, locking themselves in the bathroom and only emerging after they'd found uses for over a third of a bottle of liquid soap, half a roll of toilet paper, and every source of water they could get their hands on or in.

Back when Kathy used to commute into the Central Valley, one of the few natural hazards she had to deal with was the local phenomenon known as tule fog. Actually, the word "local" is kind of misleading, as this satellite shot from last week demonstrates.
For folks who've never been to California, and who've only looked at flat-color maps of the state, the perspective this gives on the state's geography is, well, stunning.

Some linguists at Harvard are running an online dialect survey to try to identify various regionalisms. It's a long survey (120 questions), but it's fun to see how your results differ from the rest of the country.
For example, where Paul grew up, people talked about:So ... what language do you speak?

Never once during all that time spent wrestling with the books in college did Paul wonder: "when will I be able to go see Derrida, the movie?"
Soon, evidently. For those of you who aren't sure you'll be able to spare the time, here's the obligatory PR puff piece. What next, huh?
