Why in the world is Daddy staying up so late baking pineapple cupcakes? We'll give you two guesses. :-)

No animals at dinnertime tonight, but we did have a tiny chair, cunningly nibbled out of string cheese.

OK, so we expect an almost-two-year-old to get into the whole "show and tell" concept, but it's still a shocker to hear Maya proudly explaining:This is a pink book [that] mommy got me. Or to hear her talking about other people's opinions:Gigi told me coffee's good. Wow. Those are some pretty complex sentences for someone who wasn't using words at all a year ago.

From the small world department:
We were pleasantly surprised to see that the word "blog" -- which was coined only a few years ago to describe the terse chronological style of writing used on websites like this -- has been drafted for inclusion in the next edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).
It gets even better. In college, Paul rowed on the crew team with the OED editor who collects American slang terms. Guess it's time to drop Jesse a line, huh? :-)

Presumably parents of singletons have watched their toddlers try to lurch around in their high chairs by flinging their bodies back and forth. But we suspect that only parents of twins get to see those efforts evolve into high chair races.
You gotta see it to believe it: two chairs lurching across the room towards the far wall, neck and neck, with their jockeys madly grinning as they egg on their racing steeds.

Being a parent means knowing when to keep a straight face. Take breakfast this morning for instance. How can you make a near-two-year-old keep her fingers out of the milk in her cereal bowl when she says:I fwimming. Whee, whee, whee! The smile is unavoidable; the only question is whether you can keep from laughing out loud. Whereas it's somewhat easier to be firm despite hearing the gleeful refrain:I pitting! No kids, blowing raspberries is not an acceptable indoor activity -- especially when you're getting me wet!

And tonight at dinner, Maya made yet another addition to the menagerie: an orange-colored Mandarin elephant.

Spotted at dinner this weekend: a bagel baboon. These mealtime critters just keep getting more and more exotic.
