Among the toddler set, the most prized prized party favors this season are fancy sunglasses. Since we live in sunny California, this would make sense, right? Sure ... if not for the fact that, without fail, Bryn and Maya insist on popping out the lenses before putting them on:

Thus, you can imagine the cringes around here when the kids got home tonight and started yelling about the old pair of Kath's sunglasses they'd dug up.

Not to worry. :-)

OK. Sometimes toddlers are just plain surreal, in a looney tunes sort of way. Who knows why both kids have suddenly decided to start chanting:
wun awaay! wun awaay!
Did Elmer Fudd just audition for Monty Python or something?

Def. waltz time (phrase) The experience of listening to Bryn count. For example, here's how she counts to the number nine:
one, two, free
one, two, free
one, two, free
Like her sister, she's doing some experimenting with the number four, but counting in 4/4 time just won't be as cute.

What a weekend. Queen Maya, noticing all the positive attention earned by her co-regent, has had her first success, too. Unfortunately, she was not using her throne at the time. In fact, she was still in her crib, yelling "diaper on!" in hopes that someone would get it off the floor for her. [ Hmm, and how did it get there, your royal highness? ]

For the time being, we recommend that she be kept far, far away from the Millennium Falcon. :-)

As you might imagine, tonight's hour-long festivities were chock full of excitement. To begin with, the quest for the hidden thrones covered all the bathrooms and closets in the house before the sacred receptacles were located. Then we were serenaded, at length, while the thrones were prepared for their initial use.

Things quieted down a bit after that, although the squeaky narration never subsided entirely. This can be confirmed by both sets of grandparents, who each got to listen in for a while, thanks to the miracles of modern telephony. [ The inventor of the speakerphone must have been a parent. ]

Yet saving the best for last was Queen Bryn who was ... how shall we say this ... surprisingly productive for a first-time effort. And becomingly modest about it, too! Not that the ensuing celebrations made her one whit happier about being asked to abdicate for the evening, though. No, not one whit.

Queens of all they survey. After several weeks' worth of relentless verbal lobbying -- Potty! Poopy! Peepee potty! Wipe! Peepee! See poop! etc. -- the kids finally had their way tonight, climbing onto their much-coveted thrones for the very first time:

At first, there were some differences of opinion about the proper position to assume, but a consensus was eventually reached:

We also discovered that not all thrones are created equal. Far from it. Thrones with handles are much more desirable, because they're easier to haul around the room behind you -- a killer feature that the marketing folks neglected to mention.

Of course, some parties who shall remain nameless thought it was quite funny to take advantage of the low back on the other throne.

Oh the joys of days to come!
