Bryn also knows how to make one heck of a verbal impact. Out of the blue, this morning she quietly informed her Mommy:I uv you. Awww. Now we know that it's possible for puddles to drive.

Have we fallen so far behind in chronicling the kids' language development that we'll never catch up? Quite likely; we estimate that they now know several hundred words. As a placeholder, here are some of today's verbal gems.
For example, we're having a lot of success helping the kids learn about the abstract concepts of individual ownership, sharing, taking turns, and trading -- so much so that Maya can't stop talking about them, coming up with new sentences like:- I take it.
- Here. (You take it.)
- Me too.
- Bee too.
She's also clearly mastered the numbers one and two, along with the appropriate usage of plurals:For those of you paying close attention ... yes indeed, that is her first homonym.

Off by 18 seconds, darn it! ... Huh? Say what? Explain, oh geeky one!
This site is one of hundreds of thousands that use the weblog (or "blog") format, where each entry is automatically timestamped and arranged in chronological order. For the most part, we pay little or no attention to those timestamps, just letting posts happen whenever they do. (As an inside joke, we've left the totally spurious seconds indicator after each post.)
However, today the exact time mattered -- at least to Paul. The previous post is the most appropriate palindrome he could find online to commemorate the first triple-time palindrome in over 900 years. If you use a date format of "hhmm ddmo yyyy", that post was blogged at 2002 2002 2002. Pretty cool, huh?
So what's with the 18 seconds? Well, if you instead used a date format of "mm.dd.yy hh.mm.ss", the ideal post would have been at 02.20.02 20.02.20, to form a secondary palindrome. For whatever reason, the notion of hitting the post button at exactly that second (as reckoned by a server machine he's not even on) really tickled Paul's fancy.
As we said, he's a geek. Forgive him.

Evidently the usual parade of birds outside the kitchen window wasn't moving quickly enough this morning, prompting Maya to request of her Daddy:uh bert, peeez! Her faith in parental omnipotence is breathtaking.

This morning's breakfast menu?
French toast and bananas. Yum!

If you believe the folks in the hospital nursery, our kids have been "singing", lustily, since they were first born. (Sure it's a nice stress-reducing euphemism for all that crying they hear, but does any new parent actually believe them?)
Yet it is true that our kids have been crooning various wordless tunes for longer than we can recall. We're thus happy to report that we're now starting to identify discrete song fragments.
For example, it's pretty easy to figure out what Bryn means when she sings "ah-shiz ah-shiz, aw, aw, DOW!", especially given how recognizable her tune is. But will someone please tell us what song Maya has picked up that includes the phrase: "appy yo-yo"? ;-)

Overheard this morning:Hey kids, you're going to the zoo today! [ excitement ]Do you know what the zoo is? Yeah. You do? Who lives at the zoo? Amm-ull. Have we mentioned that Bryn is mighty fond of animals?
4:52:00 PM
Overheard last night:Daddy, uh wow-wow peez? Sure thing, one doggy bib coming right up! We've been hearing plenty of three-word phrases from both kids for a while now, but this is definitely a milestone: Maya's first four-word sentence! (Despite frequent attempts to convince us otherwise, we're determined not to count "Mommy mommy mommy mommy" and its ilk.)

Happy Valentine's Day!
For most of the year, this bush is either covered in leaves or totally barren, and we've never bothered to find out what kind it is. Yet every spring, just before the leaves start budding, it bursts into bloom for a few glorious weeks.
Yep, spring. Don't be fooled by that "hno" two weeks ago. This is California, you know!

To kick off our new blast from the past feature, let's set the wayback machine to one year ago today.
That evening found more than one adult deviously conspiring to recreate history, this time on film. Being shameless, this took the form of plopping young Bryn down on her knees, with various enticing items (aka the "bait") strewn just out of reach.
Hey, that's too far! I just learned to crawl this morning!
Thanks for tipping that bottle over ...
... within lunging range, that is!

The clothing never lies. We've been noticing recently that the kids are starting to bust out of their duds, even items that were too big only a few months ago. Today, this phenomenon was made official during their latest visit to the pediatrician's:- Maya: 24 lb 14 oz, 33 3/4 in
- Bryn: 27 lb 2 oz, 32 3/4 in
According to the ubiquitous growth charts, this means that they're tall (90th and 75th percentiles respectively), and converging on weight (40th and 75th), which pretty much confirms what we've been seeing in person.

Digital cameras are very cool, but they do have their downsides. There's nothing like trolling through piles of old photos and saying:Boy, those are some great pictures. It's a shame they never made it onto the website. Perhaps some folks might wallow in that misery, bemoaning their fate as a family so short on time that they can never accomplish what they really want to. Perhaps. Not being great believers in shame or misery, we're going to take a different approach.
Thus, in the grand "it's not a bug, it's a feature!" tradition, we'll be introducing our latest feature: the blast from the past. Coming soon to a website near you!

Overheard this afternoon:I know you're having fun, but it's time to put some clothes on. You can't go like that. It's not that kind of party. The setting: enjoying the warm indoor sunshine before we left to go to a Valentine's tea party for the twins club. The outcome: we're happy to report that Maya quickly acquiesced.
Yes, Maya. In her diapers. What did you think we were talking about? This is a family weblog!

OK, so this morning, we're short on time for our usual get-everyone-out-the-door routine. The kids love putting their shoes and jackets on, so a brief "where are your shoes?" query always triggers an eager scramble to fetch them. (Indeed, some mornings they've been known to try to scamper off in search of shoes before their new diaper is fully fastened.)
Not this morning. Maya's shoes turn up quickly, but not Bryn's. Both kids join in the hunt, followed by first one parent, then the other. It's not that big a room, we say to each other. Where could they be? Are they in the living room? The kitchen? Their bedroom? The bathroom? Nope. Eventually, we have to just give up and dig out an old pair.
Things were less rushed this evening, so we took another look. Mystery solved:
Dinner anyone?

Bummer. We're unhappy to report that our cover girl, as reported yesterday, is online-only. For some reason, the editors of that fine paper chose to feature other people's children in their dead tree edition. Go figure!
As best we can tell, they update the front page of their website weekly, and we haven't been able to locate this story in their archives, so if you want to see the full effect, you'll need to go visit in the next few days.
