Goin' solo. Now that Grummy is safely on her way back to the East Coast, the four of us are on our own for the very first time. (Yes, we did do 24 hours solo when we last switched grandmothers, but that doesn't count. This time, we'll be going a whole week!)

It's been wonderful to have live-in help from various relatives for the past six weeks, but it's also nice to see how good we are at handling everything ourselves. So far, so good, but of course the real test will come in the wee hours of the morning. What's our secret plan for success, you ask?

Nap while the napping is good.

Today, the kids went to the pediatrician for their one month checkup. Both are doing fine, weighing in at 6 pounds, 13 oz. At 21 inches, Maya may be getting a wee bit taller than her sister. (Bryn claims that her sister just did a better job of stretching.)

The real highlight came when the pediatrician put both girls right next to each other to see if they'd calm each other down. (Evidently, this phenomenon is pretty well-known in the medical literature.) By now, both children have gotten pretty good at calming themselves by sucking on their own hands.

However, this is the first time we saw them both calm themselves on the same hand!

This morning, while the rest of the family was at the doctor's office for a visit with the lactation consultant, Grummy put together the new push-reel mower and did the back lawn.

This afternoon, while Kathy went off by herself to another doctor's appointment, Paul and the girls polished off the front lawn, thanks to the MaxiMom carrier (a gift from Kath's friend Kelly). Word has it that Maya dozed out front in the barcalounger, while Bryn acted as a quite vocal cheerleader out back. What a sight!

The moral of the story? Don't stay home from the doctor's office!!

There's nothing like waking up from a lengthy dream about construction equipment and realizing ...

That's not construction equipment, those are my daughters! And they're still going. Whoops!

This has really been a floral week.

On Wednesday, one of our neighbors stopped by, bearing flowers, to see how Kath was doing and meet the babies. (It's nice to live in such a friendly community.)

Then yesterday Kath got another amazing bouquet from the deans and her new department. If you ever want to wow someone in this part of the Bay Area, give Rosebowl a call. I don't even want to know how expensive they are, but the results are magnificent.

Success! With a little help from Maya, we've now got this site up and running. (Well, the home page and archives at least.)

Proud of her accomplishment, Maya is now dozing happily on Daddy's chest.
