Bullseye!

We'd been getting concerned about Kath's bloating, so today around lunchtime we wound up at the hospital, since our OB was there for the day. Everything turned out great, and we learned that the twins are probably almost eight pounds each now. So he sent us home.

On the way, we stopped to pick up a few things -- Triscuits to snack on, paper towels to clean the new place, and toothpaste (the final item missing from our birth bag.) On the way out of the store, we got stalled at Guest Services while they (futilely) attempted to locate some cool furniture for us. We went to leave, at which point, Kath's water broke. And how!

Where were we? Why at Target, of course!

Heard at 7:45 this morning, just after dropping Jen off at the San Jose Airport for her long flight back East:

"The babies want a cappuccino."

It's official! Our realtor just called to congratulate us and make arrangements for us to pick up the keys to our new house.

Guess who's hopping in the car right now?

Have you ever gotten stuck in the middle of a fruitless argument between "working moms" and "stay-at-home moms"? If so, there's a very interesting article on these Mommy Wars in the current issue of Reason magazine.

It does a nice job of drilling past the usual polarized "does not / does so" political debates, focusing instead on the more complex realities faced by parents deciding how much time and money to devote to working vs. child care. Among other things, it offers a healthy reminder about the sampling bias of a number of studies which attempt to analyze the success of various child care modes.

Mommy or mummy? Since twins are pretty rare in both our families, we've been looking for ways to document Kath's pregnancy. We've tried taking pictures, but they just haven't done justice to the beauty of her belly.

So, today we arranged to have an artist make a belly cast. It's wonderful, and we can't wait to get some of the pictures developed.

If you're feeling creative, feel free to drop us a line with ideas on how we should decorate our newest artwork!

The weather gods are too obliging. When we picked up Travis ("just call me Grandad") at the Oakland airport last Saturday, he jokingly remarked that it was far too cold here. Temperatures in the low 70s must have seemed unnatural to someone just leaving south Texas.

Today when we put him on the plane to go back, the temperatures were pushing a record-breaking 108. (To be fair, those readings were near here in Livermore. Oakland was a relatively balmy 98.) Not to feel left out ... at 103, San Francisco broke a record that went back to 1871.

Did I mention that it was hot out today?

Artist Jacob Lawrence died in his sleep today in Seattle at the age of 82. One of his prints, The Lovers, 1946, hangs in our living room.
